According to conversations at kitchensink, the most loved and hated ingredient in recipes is garlic. The complaints against garlic are: difficulty removing the papery skin, overall stickiness, and smelly hands. “First World Problems” to be sure, but people tend to avoid using garlic because of them or choosing the pre-chopped jar variety or, worse still, dried. Nothing beats fresh garlic. Besides being tasty and an aphrodisiac, its health benefits land it on the list of super foods. The trick is to find tools that will make it a joy to cook with.
While the most simple and straight forward way to process garlic is with a knife, this method is not for everyone and so the garlic press (and 100s of other gadgets) was invented.
I’ve tried several garlic presses in my many decades of cooking and have found that Zyliss makes the best. I owned one for years and would still have it today if it hadn’t been left behind in my recent move (along with an entire drawer of beloved cooking tools…grrrrrrrrr).
For a few months I carried a different brand of garlic press at kitchensink. It was super shiny, but, alas, this was its only selling point. It was way too heavy and most of the garlic squished out the sides. I’m happy to say, the Zyliss Susi 3 Garlic Press has arrived at kitchensink.
Note its sleek ergonomic design,
handy cleaning tool in case bits of garlic get stuck in the holes,
pokey garlic pushing thing that forces every morsel out the holes,
and large “hopper” that fits 2-3 cloves of garlic with the skin on.
Bottom line is that the Zyliss Susi 3 Garlic Press is easy to use, gets all the garlic out, leaves the skin behind, and cleans up easily. I just rinse it under hot water.
Welcome back Zyliss garlic press, my gadget drawer has missed you!
How are you processing garlic? Is it frustrating as all get out? Do you curse it? Avoid it? Have no fear. Come in to kitchensink and treat yo’self to a Zyliss Susi 3. Do it for your health, your love life and your sanity.
