The pope and a monkey walk into the kitchensink store. The monkey asks the sales lady, “Do you have a banana slicer?” and she answers, “Yes we do” and leads him to the shelf. He looks at it and smiles with a scary monkey grin and says, “This is perfect. Too bad I don’t have my wallet.” Ha ha ha. And the pope shrugs and shakes his head cuz he’s wearing his robe which doesn’t even have pockets to carry money, so…ha ha ha.
Not a funny joke, but the point is that I do sell banana slicers. Many customers pick it up and whisper to each other, “Why on earth does she carry such a ridiculous thing? Hopefully she hasn’t quit her day job.” Well, the joke’s on them, because it’s not just any banana slicer. It’s the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer made famous on Amazon for its outlandish reviews (over 5,500 of them). My favorite:
“I tried the banana slicer and found it unacceptable. As shown in the picture, the slicer is curved from left to right. All my bananas are curved the other way.”
The other product that gets some eyes rolling is the Hot Dog Slic’r. Recently a customer asked me if it worked. Suddenly I realized that I wasn’t really sure. I just thought they were cute. But the disappointed face of a four year old with a squashed hot dog suddenly flashed before my eyes and I knew it was time to put it to the test. I figured I’d throw the banana slicer in for good measure.
It’s pretty much self-explanatory, so I’ll just let photos do the talking…
The tests went well and I went to bed feeling satisfied with the results. I was just dozing off when suddenly I shot up in bed thinking…what if we reversed the banana and the hot dog? Could these two gadgets be interchangeable? I could barely wait until morning to test my theory.
At the crack of dawn, with coffee in hand the tests began.
First the banana (trimmed sightly) went into the Hot Dog Slic’r.
And then, vice versa…a hot dog with Hutzler 521 Banana Slicer.
How much fun are these whimsical gadgets? Conversation starters. Great for kids. Silly stocking stuffers (think ahead) and proof that whether you are the pope, a monkey, a 4 year old or just a kid at heart, there is fun to be had in the kitchen(sink)!
